PHVER

Public Health Volunteers for Emergency Response (PHVER) is a program for volunteers to help out during public health emergencies.  Volunteers can be of all ages teen to elderly adults- and can come from a variety of backgrounds.  Medical training is not necessary to become a volunteer.  People can volunteer for a variety of tasks, including data entry, supplies coordination, inventorying, and providing basic medical care.  For more information, or to request an application, contact LaMoure County Public Health at 883-5356.

CERT

(Community Emergency Response Team)

LaMoure County has implemented the CERT program.  Individuals can volunteer to take approximately 20 hours of training which will prepare them to assist in the first 72 hours following a disaster.  The volunteers are trained to help themselves, their families and their neighbors until first responders arrive.  In cooperation with first responders, CERT volunteers can provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims, providing damage assessment information and organizing other volunteers at a disaster site.  Volunteers also offer a potential workforce for performing duties such as shelter support, crowd control and evacuation.  The role of CERT volunteers is to help themselves and others until trained emergency personnel arrive.

The course consists of training in * Basic search and rescue  * Basic fire suppression  * Disaster medical operations  * Damage assessment  * Psychology of disasters  * Incident command

Individuals who choose to be a part of LaMoure County CERT will continue to receive periodic training and refresher courses and may be called upon to assist in community events or disasters.  People who do not wish to be a part of the team are still invited to attend the basic CERT training for their own personal preparedness.

LaMoure County is accepting applications for CERT volunteers.  Classes will be scheduled throughout the county depending on interested volunteers.  Co-Coordinators of the LaMoure County CERT Program are Jon Alber, Marion Fire Chief, and Sheri Gartner, Director of Emergency Services.  If you have questions, please call Jon at 669-2429 or Sheri at 830-0258.  If you would like to attend CERT training, please fill out the application and return it to LaMoure County DES, PO Box 128, LaMoure ND 58458.

CERT and ND Citizen Corps are programs under the ND League of Cities.  More information can be found on their website at www.ndlc.org
