Public Comment Sought for LaMoure County’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan

Public Comment Sought for LaMoure County’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP)

LaMoure County has completed a draft of its new Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP) and is now seeking public feedback. Like other North Dakota communities, LaMoure County is vulnerable to a variety of natural hazards such as tornadoes, severe winter storms, drought, and extreme temperatures, which can threaten life and property. Planning and mitigating for natural disasters can reduce the impact from future events and increase community resilience. This plan helps to identify and prioritize those projects.

The LaMoure County MHMP is a multi-jurisdictional plan that covers LaMoure County, including all cities and townships within the county. Update of the plan has been under direction of LaMoure County Emergency Management in cooperation with a public safety consultant, Paramount Planning, and representatives from county departments, city and township governments and other participating stakeholders. The LaMoure County MHMP includes specific actions that can be undertaken to minimize or eliminate these vulnerabilities. A few examples include: infrastructure projects for areas that experience repetitive flooding; burying powerlines that may fail due to heavy snow, ice, or windstorms; and conducting outreach to increase public awareness of severe weather and personal preparedness.

This plan is a requirement for the eligibility of federal mitigation grant programs and must be updated every five years. Funding from those mitigation programs can be used to implement mitigation action items.
All county residents, as well as other interested agencies or stakeholders are strongly encouraged to review the draft plan and provide feedback as community input is vital to the success of the plan. Feedback may be emailed directly to kelli.matzek@paramountplanning.net or to LaMoure County Emergency Manager Kimberly Robbins. All comments must be received no later than Tuesday, December 2nd.
The public can access the plan on the LaMoure County MHMP Website using the following hyperlink:LaMoure County - Paramount Planning - MHMP

A final copy of the MHMP will be available within the next several months after state and federal approvals and local adoptions are made.
