Severe Winter Weater Awareness Week is October 28-November 1, 2024
North Dakota Severe Winter Weather Awareness week will be recognized October 28--November 1st, 2024. During this week, residents are reminded to prepare their homes and vehicles for winter conditions and also review plans to receive information about severe winter weather, road conditions and building closings.
New for 2024, the National Weather Service has consolidated Extreme Cold and Wind Chill products. Now, there will only be a Extreme Cold Watch, Extreme Cold Warning, or Cold Weather Advisory. The Cold Weather Hazard Simplification Fact Sheet is here.
The website www.ready.gov/winter-weather suggests homes have a winter weather survival kit with bottled water, packaged food, flashlights, batteries, and a basic first aid kit. At least one working carbon monoxide detector is recommended for each home. For your vehicle, make sure you have gloves, warm clothes, blankets, packaged food and water and cell phone/charger to make your survival kit complete.
Before going out on the roads, make sure to check conditions at https://travel.dot.nd.gov/ or the free app: ND Roads available on Apple App or Google Play Store or dial 511. The North Dakota Department of Transportation website reminds motorists to take a NO TRAVEL ADVISED seriously as motorists who choose to travel at their own risk may become stranded and emergency responders may not be able to reach them safely. A NO TRAVEL ADVISED has the potential to change to a ROAD CLOSED OR BLOCKED. Motorists who drive past a road closure device may be fined.
LaMoure County Residents can also check county and township road snow removal by accessing the path of LaMoure County Snow Removal Equipment on the county website: https://lamourecountynd.com/snow-plow-path. This link is found under the Road Department Page. The County Website will also be updated if the courthouse building is closed due to severe weather.
The National Weather Service-Bismarck office provides several resources for residents to plan for winter events. The forecast office main page offers the current weather conditions and local radar at https://www.weather.gov/bis/ Links for “Winter Storm Severity Index”, “ND Winter Briefing”, and even “El Nino and La Nina Information” can be found under the Local Programs heading of the National Weather Service-Bismarck homepage.
